Richard Sun
| Born and raised in urban Chicago during the 60's, Richard Sun
grew up in a hardcore psychoactive environment. Most of his time was spent
in musical pursuits: he played guitar in a rock cover band, where he was
greatly influenced by experimental acts such as Pink Floyd, Roxy Music,
Queen, and Brian Eno. At age 20 he abandoned music, and left Chicago to
live in the wilderness of such places as Australia and Hawaii. Here he developed
his lifelong interest in mysticism, rigorously studying all facets of the
occult, and becoming particularly interested in the writings and life of
Crowley, before finally settling in Santa Cruz, California, where he sold
herbs and nutritional supplements. On New Year's Eve of 1992 Richard experienced his first rave, selling smart drinks at Dan Mapes' Digital Media setup in Toontown's Psychedelic Apocalypse, and was amazed by the reality of 7500 people partying and communicating in a new, open context. Inspired by the energy and potential of the rave movement, he moved from Santa Cruz to the Bay Area and devoted himself to the Ambient Temple of Imagination. There, he was the first to establish the necessity of the ambient experiment within the rave experience, and his innovative chill rooms, which featured open mics, live instruments, and rituals within larger parties, became a fixture of San Francisco rave culture. On September 10, 1992, Richard promoted his first party, the groundbreaking Imagination event, which tranformed the back room of Townsend for the first time into a huge horizontal chill space, with cushions and mattresses stretching from wall to wall, and a rotating schedule of live experimental talent. Richard strongly believes that a great part of the ambient experience is horizontal: laying down, relaxing, closing eyes, lucid dreaming, exploring inner space. Although he continues to produce chill rooms at local events, the majority of Richard's work is now done in the studio, acting as director of ATOI's musical output. He is always open to collaboration, with anyone dedicated to continuing the Work: the transmission of global mind into consciousness, the transmission of information relevant to taking our quantum leap into the next phase of human evolution. |
